I remember being on a class retreat when I was in ministerial school at Unity Village in the early nineties. We all gathered at a nearby monastery for two or three days of prayer, meditation, workshops, and intensives. In a wooded area, we were encouraged to walk a path through the trees as a meditation.
The husband of one of our fellow ministerial students decided to do just that some time after dinner. As he later told us, he began his walk around dusk. After about ten minutes on the narrow, wooded path, it grew darker and darker until he couldn't see the path in front of him. The autumn nights were already growing chilly, and he didn't want to be out very long. He stopped in his tracks, closed his eyes, and prayed, "God, please lead me out of these woods into the light." When he opened his eyes, he felt clear guidance to just put one foot directly in front of the other. As he began to do this, he felt as if he were being led by an invisible presence around curves in the path, and even over some rough, bumpy patches. In a relatively short time he rounded one last curve and began to see the lights of the monastery ahead. He stopped, took another moment of prayer to say thanks, and then headed once more for our lodging. Later, he told us his story and said he had never felt so secure and confident in his life!
When we feel lost, we have to know there is a way out and that way will be shown to us if we let go and turn it over to a Higher Power. God never fails to lead us. We can depend on this Inner Guide no matter where we find ourselves.
Higher Power, I joyfully depend on you to show me the way through life and to lead me down that path towards home.
